The premarital physical is no longer required.

Both bride and groom must present the following:

Driver's license (may not be expired) or
State-issued I.D. Card (may not be expired) or
Passport (may not be expired) or
Military I.D. (may not be expired)

Certified copy of birth certificate

Applicants 16 or 17 years of age must have certified copies of their birth certificate in order to acquire a license.
Parental consent form is available in the Register of Deeds office.

Applicants over age 14 and under 16 must attain a Court Order by District Court Judge authorizing the marriage.
|
Applicants under age 14 is unlawful to marry.
|

Both bride and groom must provide their Social Security numbers and verification of the number. Applicants may present
a Social Security card, W-2 form, or pay stub with the number as verification. Note: An alien admitted to the
United States for permanent residence or to engage in employment must be issued a Social Security number.

Applicants who are not eligible for a Social Security number may obtain a marriage license by signing an affidavit attesting
to this fact. The affidavit is available in the Register of Deeds office. In addition, such applicants must provide proof of
citizenship in the form of a duly stamped passport or green card.

Divorced applicants must provide the month and year of their last divorce. If the divorce was finalized within 30 days from
date 1 year of applying for the license, the applicant must provide an original or certified copy of the divorce decree
as well
. There is no waiting period between the divorce and applying for the new license.

The license is good immediately upon issuance and is valid for 60 days in the state of N.C. It must be returned to the
Register of Deeds' office in the county in which it was issued within 10 days after marriage.

The fee for the license is $70 (includes a certified copy). Only cash is accepted.

Marriage licenses are issued between the hours of 8:15 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Applicants should be in our office prior to 4:30 p.m.

If you need a copy of your marriage license, it can be obtained at our office in person or you may request them by mail
at Courthouse Room 102, 500 N. Elm Street, Lumberton, NC 28358. Certified copies of your
marriage license are $10.00 each.
